[edit]From Old Irish ingantus,[1] from the same root as ingnad, from Proto-Celtic *angnātos (“unknown, obscure”), from Proto-Indo-European *n̥- (“not”) + *ǵn̥h₃-tós, past participle of *ǵneh₃- (“to know”). Cognate with Irish iontas and Scottish Gaelic iongantas.
