Navajo
[edit]Etymology
[edit]y- (3rd person object prefix) + -◌́- (ni-modal 3rd person subject prefix) + -∅- (classifier) + -zííd (imperfective stem of root -ZIID, “to pour”).
Verb
[edit]yízííd
- he/she is pouring it
- Gohwééh shaa nízííd yaʼ? ― Would you pour me some coffee?
- Lą́ʼąąʼ, łaʼ naa nisííd. ― Okay, I'll pour you some.
- Náníbaaʼ tó łaʼ shaa yízííd. ― Nanibaa is pouring me some water.
Usage notes
[edit]This form cannot be used alone. It requires an indirect object in the form of the postposition shaa, naa, baa. The postposition and verb are frequently written as one word: baayízííd, etc. The simple verb that means pour it is yayiizííd, which may be used with the postposition shá, ná, bá if needed.
