[edit]- Inherited from Proto-Baltic *wiltēi,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *welh₁- (“to choose, to want”). Compare Lithuanian vìltis (“to hope”), Latvian vilt (“to cheat, swindle, delude”).[2]
- Less plausibly, could be borrowed from Middle High German wullen (“to want”), cf. German wollen.
