[edit]Mid-17th century, from Dutch waarschijnlijk (1540), itself a loan translation of French vraisemblable and/or Latin verisimilis (“probable”). Analysable as wahr (“true”) + scheinen (“to seem”) + -lich (“-ly”), thus “trueseemly, trueseeming”. Cognate to German Low German wohrschynlik.
