Finnish
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Proto-Finnic *vihtoin, possibly originally an instructive plural of *vihta (“time, occasion”) (in some dialects, vihdoin is attested with the meaning "once"; some Finnic cognates have different meanings, such as Veps vihtoi (“long ago”)). This could then be cognate with Proto-Samic *vëstē (whence Northern Sami fas (“again, once more”)), suggesting an earlier form *višta, which has been suggested to be a borrowing from Proto-Indo-European *wiH-to.[1]
