[edit]
  • IPA(key): /fɛɐ̯ˈvant/, /fɐ-/
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -ant
  • Hyphenation: ver‧wandt

Participle

[edit]

verwandt

  1. past participle of verwenden (to use, to utilize)

Adjective

[edit]

verwandt (strong nominative masculine singular verwandter, comparative verwandter, superlative am verwandtesten)

  1. related (connected by blood, adoption, or marriage)
    Hyponyms: anverwandt, blutsverwandt, stammverwandt, wurzelverwandt
  2. related (standing in relation or connection)
    Hyponyms: geistesverwandt, seelenverwandt

Usage notes

[edit]
  • In a narrower sense verwandt includes relatives by blood and adoption, their spouses and one’s own spouse—but not other “in-laws”. The latter are then specified with the adjective verschwägert (related by marriage).
  • An even narrower sense is blutsverwandt (related by blood).
