[edit]Uncertain. Possibilities include:
- lap (“piece of cloth, rag”) + ver- -en (for which compare verflensen, which is possibly influenced by flens (“pancake, cloth”)), referring to the limpness of the leaves of a withered plant;
- ver- + leppen (“to sip, pout one's lips”), a verb derived from lip (“lip”), referring to the limpness of a lower lip.
