[edit]Probably derived or akin to Late Latin vibia (“crosspiece”) which was perhaps borrowed from Gaulish; if just akin, then from a local Celtic *vibio-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (“to twist, to twine”).[1] Cognate with Portuguese veio.
