Etymology

Inherited from Old Czech vdáti, from Proto-Slavic *vъdati. By surface analysis, v- +‎ dát. Cognates include Russian вда́ться (vdátʹsja) and Polish wdać.

  1. (reflexive with se) to marry (of woman, to take a husband)
    Jejich dcera se vdala za sousedova syna.
    Their daughter married the neighbour's son.
  2. (transitive) to marry (to give away a woman as a wife)
    Vdali svou dceru za sousedova syna.
    They married their daughter to the neighbour's son.
