[edit]From Middle Dutch varken, verken, from Old Dutch farkīn, ferkīn, an old diminutive, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *farhaz (Proto-West Germanic *farh) + Proto-Germanic *-ukaz (Proto-Germanic *-ukīn, with another diminutive suffix attached). Compare Central Franconian Ferke, Low German Farken.
