[edit]From vara (“be”) + hugget (“cut (slashed)”) + som (“as”) + stucket (“stabbed”), developed from earlier "varken huggen eller stucken" ("neither cut nor stabbed" – neither one thing or the other; neither here nor there), from German weder gehauen noch gestochen, from fencing lingo.
