Etymology

From a Slavic language, perhaps from Russian, compare Old Russian воево́да (vojevóda, commander of an army), Serbo-Croatian vojvoda (duke), Polish wojewoda (general, governor). Ultimately, from Proto-Slavic *vojevoda, from Proto-Slavic *vojь (army) + *voditi (to lead).
