Etymology

vườn +‎ thượng uyển. Attested in Vịnh hoa yên tự phú (詠花煙寺賦), attributed to Huyền Quang (1254-1334).

A so-called "redundant" construction, because both vườn and uyển (苑) are morphemes that mean "garden"; thượng uyển (上苑) itself is also attested as a free noun in texts.
