From Middle Low German wert (host), from Proto-Germanic *werduz, cognate with German Wirt, Dutch waard, Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌳𐌿𐍃 (wairdus). Swedish värd is also borrowed from Low German.
