Etymology

[edit]

twt (image) +‎ ꜥnḫ (living) +‎ jmn (Amun) +‎ ḥqꜣ (ruler) +‎ jwnw-šmꜥw (Thebes, literally Heliopolis of Upper Egypt), thus literally meaning ‘The Living Image of Amun, Ruler of the Heliopolis of Upper Egypt [i.e. Thebes]’. The compound is based on the pharaoh’s earlier name, twt-ꜥnḫ-jtn (literally living image of the Aten). A shorter form of twt-ꜥnḫ-jmn-ḥqꜣ-jwnw-šmꜥw is found as twt-ꜥnḫ-jmn (Tutankhamon).
