[edit]From Middle Dutch twiling, twilling, tweiling, from Old Dutch *twinling, possibly from Proto-Germanic *twinilingaz, with the first element from *twinaz (compare German Zwilling, English twinling, Danish tvilling). By surface analysis, twee (“two”) + -ling.
