[edit]From Proto-Finnic *tutkain. Equivalent to tutka- + -in (from the same root tutka- as tutkia; see it for more).

- (chiefly biblical) goad (long, pointed stick used to prod animals)
- On turha potkia tutkainta vastaan.
- No good kicking against the goad(s).
- (dated, literary) point, sharp tip (of a knife, sword, etc., but occasionally also more figuratively, e.g. of a blade of grass or a mountaintop)
- Synonym: kärki
- (weaving, usually in the plural) thrum (an end of a warp thread in a loom which remains unwoven)
- (printing) pointure (a tool used with a printing press, with one or more spikes, that is used to align the sheet with the tympan, such as when printing on both sides)
- (military) mine probe, landmine probe (long thin stick used to locate mines)
