Etymology
[edit]From Old High German trinkan (attested since the 8th century), from Proto-West Germanic *drinkan, from Proto-Germanic *drinkaną, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrenǵ- (“to draw into one's mouth, sip, gulp”), nasalised variant of *dʰreǵ- (“to draw, glide”). Cognates include Yiddish טרינקען (trinken), German trinken, Dutch drink, English drink; Old Norse drekka.
