[edit]From Middle High German trūrec, from Old High German trūrag, from Proto-Germanic *dreuzagaz (“bloody”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰreus- (“to break, break off, crumble”). Cognate with Dutch treurig (“sad, gloomy”), Low German trurig (“sad”), Hunsrik traurich (“sad”), English dreary (“grievous, dire, appalling, drab, dark, colourless, cheerless”), Old Norse dreyrigr (“bloody”).
