Borrowed from Ukrainian товариш (tovaryš), from Proto-Slavic *tovariščь; compare Russian това́рищ (továrišč), Serbo-Croatian товариш, Polish towarzysz, Finnish toveri. Meaning of "fellow socialist" borrowed from Russian това́рищ (továrišč).
