[edit]From torrente, from Latin torrentem, present active participle of torreō (“to scorch, burn, parch”), from Proto-Italic *torzeō, causative of the Proto-Indo-European root *ters- (“dry”). By surface analysis, torrent(e) (“torrent”, “stream”) + -izio (derivational suffix).
