tilheyra (weak verb, third-person singular past indicative tilheyrði, supine tilheyrt)

  1. to belong (to someone/something)
    hálsmen tilheyrði eitt sinn greifynju.
    This necklace once belonged to a countess.
  2. to be part (of something) (this usage gives the notion that it is an indispensable part)
    Það tilheyrir giftingarathöfninnibrúðhjónin kyssist.
    It is [a traditional/indespensable] part of the wedding ceremony that the couple kiss.
