From Old Irish tanaide,[1] related to tanae, from Proto-Celtic *tanauyos (compare Welsh tenau), from Proto-Indo-European *ténh₂us (compare Ancient Greek ταναός (tanaós, outstretched, tall), Latin tenuis, Old Norse þunnr).
