Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *takijas, ultimately from Proto-Baltic *dagijas (burdock) (compare modern Latvian dadzis and Lithuanian dagys). Cognate with Finnish takiainen, Votic and Ingrian takkiain, Ludian takkiaińe, Livvi takkis- (in the compound takkisheinü (burdock)) and Veps takkiž.

The word has folk-etymologically merged with the stem in taki-sta/ma (to prevent) (compare the dialectal definition “to connect, fasten, tie up”, and its standard language equivalent takerdama (to tangle)).

  • IPA(key): /ˈtɑkjɑs/, [ˈtɑkjɑ̈s]
