[edit]From Middle Low German tȫven, from Proto-Germanic *tōbijaną, cognate with Dutch toeven (“to linger”). Derived from the noun *tōbą (“hesitation”) (Icelandic tóf) and related to the verb *tabijaną (“to delay”) (Old Norse tefja).
