From Middle Low German tȫven, from Proto-Germanic *tōbijaną, cognate with Dutch toeven (to linger). Derived from the noun *tōbą (hesitation) (Icelandic tóf) and related to the verb *tabijaną (to delay) (Old Norse tefja).
