[edit]From Proto-Germanic *swalaz (“cool, [originally: burningly] cold”), from *swelaną (“to burn slowly, create a burningly cold sensation”), from Proto-Indo-European *swel- (“to shine, warm up, burn”). Akin to German schwül (“sultry”), Dutch zwoel (“sultry”), and Ancient Greek σέλας (sélas, “luminous”).
