From Proto-Philippine *suhaq (pomelo). However, according to Fr. San Buena Ventura (1613), the word came from a Visayan source. Compare Ilocano sua, Dupaningan Agta suwa, Kapampangan sua, Bikol Central suwa, Cebuano suwa, and Tausug suwaꞌ gadja.
