[edit]From Old High German suohhen, from Proto-Germanic *sōkijaną, from Proto-Indo-European *séh₂gyeti (“to give a sign”). Compare German suchen, Low German söken, Dutch zoeken, West Frisian sykje, English seek, Faroese søkja, Swedish söka, Gothic 𐍃𐍉𐌺𐌾𐌰𐌽 (sōkjan). Non Germanic cognates include Latin sāgiō (“I perceive”), Old Irish saigid (“to approach; to seek out”), Ancient Greek ἡγέομαι (hēgéomai, “I lead, guide”).
