Late Middle English, from Latin staphisagria, from Ancient Greek σταφίς (staphís, “grape”) (from σταφυλή (staphulḗ, “bunch of grapes”)) + ἀγρία (agría, “wild”) (literally "living in the fields," from ἀγρός (agrós, “field”)).
