German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From northern Middle High German stenen and Middle Low German stȫnen, stēnen, from Old Saxon *stenan, from Proto-Germanic *stenaną. Cognate with Dutch steunen. The rounded vowel likely through merger with another verb, either Middle Low German stōnen, from Proto-Germanic *stunōną (English stun), or a descendant of *stunjaną (Old Norse stynja).
