Etymology

Epithet name used by Linnaeus. Variant of previous (e)spervarius, (e)sperverius, (e)sprevarius, (e)sperverus, a Latinization of Old French esprevier (sparrowhawk) (ancestor of French épervier), ultimately from Germanic *sparwô (sparrow)) + a second element that is either from Latin -ārius or Germanic *arô (eagle). Linnaeus's spelling with sparv- was possibly influenced by Swedish sparv (sparrow).
