From Proto-Italic *solnos, from Proto-Indo-European *sol(h₂)nós, from *solh₂- (whole). Cognate with Ancient Greek ὅλος (hólos, whole, entire, utter, perfect, complete) and Sanskrit सर्व (sárva).
