From Proto-West Germanic *snīþan, from Proto-Germanic *snīþaną, from Proto-Indo-European *sneyt-. Cognate with Old Dutch snīthan, Old Saxon snīthan, Old Frisian snītha, Old English snīþan, Old Norse sníða, Gothic 𐍃𐌽𐌴𐌹𐌸𐌰𐌽 (sneiþan).
