Etymology

From Middle Dutch signieren, which was borrowed from Old French signier (and adapted using the Dutch verbal suffix -eren), but with its spelling re-borrowed from modern French signer.

  • In formal usage, this word can be used for any act of marking with a signature. But in common usage, this word is rarely used to refer to anything other than signing objects, such as books or shirts or photographs; the words ondertekenen or tekenen are used otherwise informally, as e.g. when signing forms, deeds or other documents.
