Etymology

Borrowed from Japanese 尺八 (しゃくはち, shakuhachi), from (t͡ɕʰiᴇk̚, an archaic measure of length approximately equal to 30 centimeters) + (pˠɛt̚, eight), corresponding to the standard length of the instrument (approximately 55 centimeters).
