The Brazilian Expeditionary Force's insignia had a pipe-smoking snake on it because, in the times of World War 2, it used to be a common saying that “seria mais fácil uma cobra fumar do que o Brazil entrar na guerra” (“A snake smoking would be more likely than Brazil joining the war”).
