German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]An originally Low and Central German word, from northern Middle High German slummen and Middle Low German slummeren, slommen, from Old High German *slūmēn, from Proto-Germanic *slūm-. Cognate with Dutch sluimeren, English slumber.
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]schlummern (weak, third-person singular present schlummert, past tense schlummerte, past participle geschlummert, auxiliary haben)
- (intransitive) to sleep lightly or briefly; to doze; to slumber
Usage notes
[edit]- Schlummern typically refers to actual sleep, not just rest with one’s eyes closed. The synonym dösen has both of these meanings.
