From Middle High German schīzen, from Old High German *skīzan (attested as biskīzan), from Proto-Germanic *skītaną, from Proto-Indo-European *skeyd-, *sḱeyd- (to part with, separate, cut off). Compare Low German schieten, Dutch schijten, and English shit, Danish skide.
