Etymology

From Middle High German sūmeselic. Equivalent to obsolete Saumsal (neglect, tardiness) +‎ -ig; the former from säumen (older also saumen) + -sal. Now sometimes associated with unrelated selig (happy, carefree), thus “neglect-happy” as it were.
