From Old Norse samband, from Proto-Germanic *sambandą, from Proto-Indo-European *som-bʰondʰ-ó-m, from *som- (together) +‎ *bʰendʰ- (to bind) +‎ *-ós. Equivalent to sam- (together) +‎ band (connection, binding). Cognate with Sanskrit सम्बन्ध m (sambandhá, connection, binding), Ossetian ӕмбонд (æmbond, fence).
