From Proto-Balto-Slavic *salˀdus, from Proto-Indo-European *sh₂el-d-u-s, an extended form of *sh₂el-, *seh₂l- (salt); the *-d- may have been added by analogy with the *-d- in Proto-Indo-European *sweh₂d- (sweet). Compare the related verb sálti (sweeten), as well as Latvian salds, Proto-Slavic *soldъkъ.[1]
