From Gothic 𐍃𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌷𐍄𐍃 (slaihts), from Proto-Germanic *slihtaz (smooth). Cognate with Italian schietto. The sense of "son" derived from the meaning "genuine" (i.e. of lawful parentage, not born out of wedlock).
