Via Middle Low German rūterīe, derived from Middle Low German rūter (cavalryman, horseman) (hence Danish rytter (horseman)). Compare Swedish rytteri, German Reiterei (earlier Reuterei, assimilated to Reiter (horseman)), Dutch ruiterij.
