Via Middle Low German rūter from Dutch ruiter (horseman), from Middle French routier (brigand), from route (road) +‎ -ier (Latinized as Medieval Latin ruptarius). The Dutch word was also borrowed to German Reuter (cavalryman), Swedish ryttare (rider).
