[edit]Via Middle Low German rūter from Dutch ruiter (“horseman”), from Middle French routier (“brigand”), from route (“road”) + -ier (Latinized as Medieval Latin ruptarius). The Dutch word was also borrowed to German Reuter (“cavalryman”), Swedish ryttare (“rider”).
