From Old Swedish (i.e. a loanword before 1541), originally from a Celtic word, from Gaulish *ruskā, from Proto-Celtic *rūskos (bark).

Cognate with French ruche (beehive) and German Reuse (fish-trap), as well as Danish ruse (fish trap) and Norwegian Bokmål ruse (fish trap)

Usage notes
