Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps from the onomatopoeic rutista (compare dialectal ruti (broken, in(to) pieces)); other theories include that the prefix is re-extracted from rutikuiva specifically, which in turn would be from earlier ruutikuiva (ruuti + kuiva), but this does not explain the other compounds (like rutihullu and rutiköyhä, which do not appear to be more recent) all that well.[1]

Prefix

ruti-

  1. Intensifying prefix; very.
