ruti-
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Perhaps from the onomatopoeic rutista (compare dialectal ruti (“broken, in(to) pieces”)); other theories include that the prefix is re-extracted from rutikuiva specifically, which in turn would be from earlier ruutikuiva (ruuti + kuiva), but this does not explain the other compounds (like rutihullu and rutiköyhä, which do not appear to be more recent) all that well.[1]
Prefix
[edit]ruti-
- Intensifying prefix; very.
