Etymology

From Old Norse hrœpa (to vilify), from Proto-Germanic *hrōpijaną (to call), ognatewith Gothic 𐌷𐍂𐍉𐍀𐌾𐌰𐌽 (hrōpjan, to cryout). Derived from *hrōpaną (to call) (whence Danish råbe (to shout)).
