Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Vulgar Latin *peturnīcula. Compare Aromanian pitruniclji.
The oldest attested form may be пътꙋᵖɴике (/pəturˈnike/ or in modernised spelling păturniche), found as a surname in a document from Suceava dated to 1597.[1] For the modern standard potârniche, note that /o/ can develop from /ə/ when preceded by a labial, as in porumb, boteza < părumb, băteza < palumbus, baptizāre. /ə/ in turn can develop from an older /e/ when preceded by a labial, as in păcurar, păcat < pecurar, pecat < pecorārius, peccātum.[2] (From păcurar there also arose a variant pocurar.)[3]
