[edit]From an older form *băteza, from Vulgar Latin baptidiāre, from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin baptīzāre, present active infinitive of baptīzō, from Ancient Greek βαπτῑ́ζω (baptī́zō, “immerse, baptize”).
