From Ancient Greek πνικτός (pniktós) +‎ -gen. The first element derives from Ancient Greek πνίγω (pnígō, to choke, to stifle) (a property of nitrogen), which is ultimately Pre-Greek. By surface analysis, pnicto- +‎ -gen.
