[edit]From Ancient Greek πνικτός (pniktós) + -gen. The first element derives from Ancient Greek πνίγω (pnígō, “to choke, to stifle”) (a property of nitrogen), which is ultimately Pre-Greek. By surface analysis, pnicto- + -gen.
